A Different Perspective on Gratitude

This is the week of Thanksgiving here in America.

For my part, I try to live each and every day of my life from the inspiring and energizing perspective of gratitude.

When I think of about the quality of my life I am thankful for:

  • The precious gift of life and consciousness
  • My deeply inspiring “inner life”
  • The loving relationship my wife and I share
  • My wonderful step son
  • My friends and colleagues
  • The privilege of doing my work as a love and relationship coach and the wonderful Clients who make this possible
  • My health

The list goes on and on.

I am especially thankful for my struggles as these have helped me work to develop more of my potential as a human being.

I am also reminded of the support I receive inwardly each and every day from my deep connection to God in my heart.

From my world-view God does not bless us with material wealth, favorable life circumstances, or an “easy way to go”.

Rather, the blessings of life include challenges that help us to uncover the vast inner resources that are our birthright as divine beings, children of God.

A famous Sufi Poem attributed to Hazrat Inyat Khan expresses what I wish to share better than I could ever hope to:

“I asked for strength
and God gave me difficulties to make me strong.
I asked for wisdom
And God gave me problems to learn to solve.
I asked for prosperity
And God gave me a brain and brawn to work.
I asked for courage
And God gave me dangers to overcome.
I asked for love
And God gave me people to help.
I asked for favors
And God gave me opportunities.
I received nothing I wanted.
I received everything I needed.”

So as you gather with friends and family to celebrate Thanksgiving, I ask you to reflect on this poem and give heart-felt thanks for the naturally creative and resourceful human beings you are.

Blessings to you, your family, friends, pets, and all you hold dear.
